how to get the maximum life of your battery

Batteries have a limited life and on average last 3.5 years. Once a battery starts to fail after three years of age it very rarely responds to recharging. The reason for this is that a battery positive plate self-destructs leaving no plate left to hold a charge required for starting a vehicle.

Follow these tips to ensure you obtain the maximum service life of your vehicle's battery:

• Keep battery terminals clean and dry at all times.
• Maintain fluid levels but never over-fill your battery.
• Distilled water is recommended for replacing battery fluid.
• Consult your owner's manual before disconnecting your battery to ensure that computer or radio memories are not lost.
• Never leave your battery for long periods without being charged.

Take care when handling batteries, as incorrect handling can cause serious injuries. Batteries contain sulphuric acid and give off explosive hydrogen gases, so naked flames should always be kept away from batteries. Children should be kept away from batteries.
